What is fostering?

Becoming a foster home for homeless cats or kittens can be rewarding and fulfilling.

Fostering is the option of taking a cat or kitten home and caring for that animal until it is ready for adoption. This gives the cat(s) an opportunity to live in a home environment because living in even the best shelter is stressful for an any animal. Young kittens deserve to have their early "childhood" in a home setting, until they are spayed or neutered and are ready for adoption. Senior cats deserve to live their days stress free.

During the kitty's stay in a foster home, we can learn if they are good with children and other animals, the pet's personality, and if they have any special needs. Some pets need extra attention, training, special medical treatment, or socialization.

How Does Fostering Work?

The foster home must complete an application process which includes three parts:

  1. The Volunteer Application
  2. The SOS Policies and Procedures document
  3. The Hold Harmless, Waiver and Indemnification Agreement

All of these forms are available on the Volunteer page of our website and may be submitted electronically via a secure connection. A representative of SOS will be in touch with you very soon.

The application process is for the protection of the animals. A home visit is required prior to any foster cats being placed in the home. All animals will be vaccinated and given a basic health checkup and, if not spayed or neutered already, an SOS veterinarian will perform the procedure.

General Information for Foster Homes

  1. If you rent, your landlord must allow pets.
  2. If you have cats and/or dogs, they must be current on their vaccinations and be sterilized.
  3. Save Our Strays provides food and litter (if requested) and a cage or condo cage if necessary. These are kept in a central location for pick up. Medical expenses are also covered. The cat or kitten must go to one of our vets. You most likely will have to transport the cat to the vet and also to one of the outlets for adoption.
  4. All cats MUST stay inside.

In an effort to serve the many cats and kittens that need our help, we are continually looking to expand our list of foster homes. If you can help, or know someone who can, even on a temporary basis, please contact us at sos@saveourstraysinc.com or call 727-481-5262.

Other Volunteer Opportunities

Save Our Strays, Inc. participates in several fundraising events throughout the year. These might include:

  • The Spring "Get Rescued" event in Gulfport
  • The Festival of Pets in April each year
  • Gift wrapping at retail outlets during the Christmas season

Fundraising events are fun and a great way to spread the word about rescue in general and Save Our Strays in particular. Our foster home volunteers often don't have the time to care for the cats, go to Petsmart and attend fundraising events - and work full time, so your help with any other needed work is greatly appreciated by all!

We also need people to help with:

  • Transporting cats to the veterinarian, Petsmart or other fundraising events
  • Feeding, cleaning and visiting with cats and kittens at Cat Haven, our new facility for housing cats and kittens ready for adoption

If you are interested in volunteering, please complete the application process which includes three parts:
