Discover the Joy of Volunteering
Volunteering not only helps stray animals find homes, but it also enriches your life. This section highlights the impact your efforts can make. Dive in to see how you can lend a hand and make a meaningful change in our community.
Fostering
Becoming a foster home for homeless cats or kittens can be rewarding and fulfilling. Fostering is the option of taking a cat or kitten home and caring for that animal until it is ready for adoption. This gives the cat(s) an opportunity to live in a home environment because living in even the best shelter is stressful for an any animal. Young kittens deserve to have their early “childhood” in a home setting, until they are spayed or neutered and are ready for adoption. Senior cats deserve to live their days stress free.
During the kitty’s stay in a foster home, we can learn if they are good with children and other animals, the pet’s personality, and if they have any special needs. Some pets need extra attention, training, special medical treatment, or socialization.
How Does Fostering Work?
The foster home must complete an application process which includes four parts:
Home Visit
The application process is for the protection of the animals. A home visit is required prior to any foster cats being placed in the home. All animals will be vaccinated and given a basic health checkup and, if not spayed or neutered already, an SOS veterinarian will perform the procedure.
In an effort to serve the many cats and kittens that need our help, we are continually looking to expand our list of foster homes. If you can help, even on a temporary basis, please contact us at sos@saveourstraysinc.com or call 727-481-5262
Volunteering
Volunteering not only helps provide love and care to animals in need, but it also gives you the chance to make a meaningful difference in your community. It can be a rewarding way to connect with other volunteers, have time with kitties, build compassion, reduce your own stress, and gain valuable experience working with animals.
In addition to fostering, we need people to help with:
- Transporting cats to the veterinarian, Petsmart or other fundraising events
- Feeding, cleaning and visiting with senior and special needs cats at our facility
If you are interested in volunteering, please complete our three-part process:
A representative of SOS will then be in touch with you soon. Generally, volunteers must be at least 18 years of age, but there may be opportunities for those younger than 18 to help with fundraising. We encourage you to reach out to talk with us with questions or new ideas: e-mail us at sos@saveourstraysinc.com or call 727-481-5262.
General Information for Foster Homes
If you rent, your landlord must allow pets.
If you have cats and/or dogs, they must be current on their vaccinations and be sterilized.
Save Our Strays provides food and litter (if requested) and a cage or condo cage if necessary. These are kept in a central location for pick up. Medical expenses are also covered. The cat or kitten must go to one of our veterinarians. You most likely will have to transport the cat to the vet and also to one of the outlets for adoption.
All cats MUST stay inside.
